You can think of causative form as "to make someone do something".

How to make causative form?

breakdown

For group 1 verbs, you can change the i to a + .
For group 2 verbs, simply add させ to the verb.
For group 3 verbs, します becomes させます and 来ます becomes こさせます.

structure: GROUP 1 VERBS
書きます -> 書かせます 書かせる
読みます -> 読ませます よませる

You can also use the causative form to express "Someone let someone do something".
くれる is to receive.
あげる is to give.

Verb (causative て form) + くれますあげます

  • The difference between ないはずです and はずがありません is that the latter is a stronger expression.

Causative + passive

breakdown

In I2: Lesson 8, we learned about the passive form and its usage. Verbs in passive form are often used to express the feeling of being at the receiving end of something bad.

Combined with the causative form, you can express the same feeling because you're being forced to do something.

structure
Verb (causative form) + られ
例:使わせられる 座らせられる こさせられる
SENTENCE structure
部長 に 残業 を させられでした

Causative-passive verbs are basically in passive form. Hence, the sentence structure would have to adhere to that. See I2: Lesson 8.

examples
1. My friend made me wait at the station for an hour.
1. 私は友達に駅で1時間待たせられました
2. My mother made me do the dishes
2. 私は母に皿を洗わせられました
皿 ・ さら ・ Dishes
3. My parents made me give up soccer.
3. 私は両親にサッカーを諦めさせられました
諦める ・ あきらめる ・ To give up
Things to note:
  • Because causative verbs are group 2 verbs, you can simply add られ to turn it into causative-passive verb.
  • Causative-passive verbs are basically in passive form. Hence, the sentence structure would have to adhere to that.
