JLPT-N3: Lesson 8
In this lesson of the N3 class, we'll be looking at the usage of さ・み and の・こと.
We can use さ to express 'even'; み to express '~ness' and further breakdown of usage of の and こと.
さ
We can use さ to turn adjectives into nouns. It be can be used to express:
~ness; e.g. greatness, foolishness
さ is used for things that are measurable or when the speaker wants to objectively indicate the degree of a state.
1. このケーキの美味しさを、世界中の人に伝えたい。
2. 昔の人は、今の世界の便利さを知らないよ。
み
We can use み to turn adjectives into nouns. It be can also be used to express:
~ness
This is similar to さ with the exception that み is more subjective. It sometimes involves the speaker's thoughts or feelings about something.
More specifically, it is used to create nouns that express impressions and characteristics such as sense emotion appearance color taste.
1. 彼は年とって丸みがでてきたようだね。
2. 彼女は頭がいいが、人間に暖かみがない。
の・こと
We've learned several ways to use の and こと in the earlier lessons. Sometimes it can be used interchangeably.
の can be used to represent behavioural or a feeling while 事 is used to represent bigger things like ideas or something about the world.
