overview:

In this lesson, we'll be looking specifically at the usage of ように、to express the continuation of an event; to advice or to warn; to wish or hope for something.

よう(に)

breakdown

We can use よう(に) to express:
as~; continuation of an event (talk/meeting)


This is commonly used as a continuation of a previous conversation, dialogue etc. It is used at the beginning of the sentence to facilitate the continuation.

Continuation from what we've both seen on the news
1. As reported in the news, it seems that this year will be hotter than the average year.

Both have existing knowledge of prior conversation
2. As Mr Kimura has said before, the new manager is good looking.

Known fact
4. It is a well known fact that our country is entering an aging society.
4. 周知のように、わが国は愈々本格的な超高齢社会に入った。
Things to note:
  • You can think of ように in this usage as the literal translation of "...as per..."
  • You can use ように if you assume the other party has the existing knowledge of the topic as well.

ように

We can use ように to give a:
a gentle order; warn to do or not to do; advice


Think of this as a shorter way to say ようにしてください. We covered this in Intermediate 2 Lesson 7.

Things to note:
  • ように in this usage is a shorter way to say ようにしてください.

よう(に)

We can use ように to give a:
hoping or wishing for something


This expression can be used for both the speaker's or someone else's desires. When expressing one's desires, it is mostly used for prayer-like situations.

E.g. "I hope I can pass my exams."
