In Intermediate 1 lesson 4, how to turn verbs into noun phrases. We'll be using [plain style] こと to express noun phrases.
What is a noun phrase?
a word or group of words containing a noun and functioning in a sentence as subject, object, or prepositional object.
Ok, to give a few examples:
1. Cat (Noun)
1. The cats over there(Noun phrase)
2. Socks (Noun)
2. A pair of socks (Noun phrase)
3. Car (Noun)
3. An expensive car (Noun phrase)
How to construct a noun phrase in Japanese?
Here are some common noun phrase structure:
1. [Noun] wa [noun] desu.
2. [Noun] wa [adjective] desu.
3. [Noun] wa [noun] ga [adjective] desu.
4. [Noun] wa [noun] o/ga verb.
Examples [noun] wa [noun] desu:
1. My hobby[noun] is sports[noun].
1. 私の趣味はスポーツです。
2. Lunch time is around 12PM.
2. ランチタイムは12ぐらいです。
3. The platypus is a mammal.
3. カモノハシは哺乳類(ほにゅうるい)です。
Examples [noun] wa [adjective] desu:
1. This game[noun] is difficult[adjective].
1. このゲームは難しいです。
2. Lunch[noun] was delicious[adjective].
2. ランチは美味しいです。
3. The weather[noun today is fine[]adjective.
3. 今日の天気は良いです。
Examples [noun] wa [noun] ga [adjective] desu:
1. We[noun] like[adjective] Japanese cuisine[noun] very much.
1. 私達は日本の料理が大好きです。
2. He enjoyed the trip.
2. 彼は旅行が楽しかったです。
3. This cat likes duck meat.
3. この猫は鴨肉(かもにく)が好きです。
Examples [noun] wa [noun] ga/o [verb] desu:
1. I[noun] think he[noun] can't speak[verb] English.
1. 私は彼が英語を話せない事と思います。
2. I know he took the money.
2. 私は彼がお金を取った事を知っています。
