I1 - Lesson 1
In Intermediate 1 lesson 1, we will learn how to quote from someone's speech. There are two ways of quoting, namely the direct and the indirect method.
When we quote someone, 「」is used to mark the speech.
Sentence structure
Someone said 「something」と 言いました。
1. I like to sleep a lot when I'm free.
1. 私は暇なときたくさん寝るが好きです。
2. I washed my hands right before I ate my lunch.
2. 私はご飯を食べるとき、手を洗いました。
3. I went to bed right after I took a shower.
3. 私はシャワーを浴びたとき、寝た。
4. I took a shower right before I went to bed.
4. 私は寝るとき、シャワーを浴びた。
- Right before is always in dictionary form(present tense).
- Right after is always in dictionary form(past tense).
i-adjectives
[Dictionary form] + とき
1. I don't read when I'm busy.
1. 私は忙しいとき読みません。
2. I read when I'm not busy.
2. 私は忙しくないとき、読みます。
3. I didn't read when I was busy.
3. 私は忙しいとき、読みませんでした。
4. I read when I wasn't busy.
4. 私は忙しくなかったとき、読みました。
na-adjectives
[Dictionary form] + とき
1. I read manga when I'm free.
1. 私は暇なとき、漫画を読みます。
2. I do not read manga when I'm not free.
2. 私は暇ではないとき、漫画を読みません。
3. I read manga when I was free.
3. 私は暇だったときとき、漫画を読みました。
4. I didn't read manga when I wasn't free.
4. 私は暇ではなかったとき、漫画を読みませんでした。

1. I do not want to go out when it's raining.
1. 雨のとき、出かけたくない。

Using と to express 'something that happens naturally', if, when

1. I rested and naturally I got well.
1. 休んだと、治ります。
2. I turned on the air-con and naturally the room gets cooler.
2. エアコンをつけると、部屋が涼しくなります。
3. You go straight and you will see a park.
3. まっすぐ行くと、公園を見える。
4. I ate a lot and naturally I got fat.
4. たくさん食べると、太くなります
- You can think of the usage of と as common sense.
For example:
If you eat a lot, you'll get fatter.
If you exercise, you'll get healthier.
と can be used in these situations. - と is often used to describe direction.

2. I read when I'm not busy.
